White’s Metal Detectors – A Look Back

White's metal detectors have been around for over fifty years now and they continue to be the leading manufacturer of metal detectors. Today, their products, like the DFX and XLT, are pinnacles of electronics technology with microprocessors and surface mount components. Despite this fact, every time I see White's metal detectors my mind wanders back to a much simpler time.

In 1974 I was a ten year old youngster living in southwestern Ohio. The important things in my life were winning at kick ball and doing all my homework. I had never heard of White's metal detectors. Coin hunting was not foreign to me as I would regularly scour the ground where we played ball in order to find coins. My motivations in doing so were a cold soda pop and a pack of Wacky Packages stickers.

One warm, summer's day I visited my local elementary school to play on the swings. In the distance was an elderly gentleman swinging around a blue contraption. He would swing it around awhile and then squat down and dig in the ground. What on earth was going on? After approaching this curiosity, I discovered that he was digging up old coins and plenty of them.

Old coins and any artifacts related to the past have always been an interest, even at this age. I had a small coin collection at home. Seeing this man digging up history beneath the surface was extremely fascinating. He pulled handfuls of old half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies from his apron and showed them to me.

The word Coinmaster was painted on the side of the bright blue box of his money machine. It was one of the early White's metal detectors that led to a whole legendary series of detectors for the company. The old treasure hunter was patient with all my questions and took the time to describe how the machine worked and let me dig some of his targets. Little did he know that this would impact me for the rest of my life. The school has been torn down and I'm sure the old gentleman has long since passed.

From that day forward, White's metal detectors have held a special, nostalgic place in my heart. It would be twelve years after that day before I could afford to buy a good metal detector. It is no surprise that White's metal detectors were my first choice. Without hesitation I purchased their Coinmaster 6000/D series 2. For years it provided me with many finds and much more in exercise and fun. I have since moved on to several of their newer models.

The color of White's metal detectors has changed since that day as a boy, but I still see a bright blue box glistening in the sunlight like a beacon drawing me towards a hobby that has provided a lifetime of enjoyment.
